President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia expresses commitment to strengthening ties with India during his state visit, marking a historic moment as he becomes the Chief Guest for India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday, hosted by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His visit represents a pivotal chapter in India-Indonesia relations, culminating in his role as the Chief Guest for India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations.
Arriving on Thursday evening, President Prabowo was warmly greeted by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
Strengthening Historical Bonds
Speaking to reporters, President Prabowo expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Indonesia considers India a very close friend. India was one of the first countries, perhaps the first, to recognise our independence and support us in our struggle for freedom. We will never forget what India did to help us.”
The Indonesian leader emphasised his commitment to enhancing bilateral ties:
“I’m committed to promoting closer cooperation, closer partnership with India. That is my determination.”
Significant Engagements
During his visit, President Prabowo will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat; hold bilateral talks with PM Modi at Hyderabad House, including the exchange of MOUs and press statements.; meet Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and President Droupadi Murmu.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also called on President Prabowo, praising his guidance in fostering multifaceted bilateral ties.

Indonesia and India share a profound historical connection. President Prabowo acknowledged India’s support during Indonesia’s war of independence, remarking: “India provided medical aid, financial aid, and other support. For us, India remains a very important friend and partner.”
Highlighting the enduring camaraderie, Indonesia’s first President Sukarno was the Chief Guest at India’s inaugural Republic Day in 1950. This year, a 352-member contingent from Indonesia’s National Armed Forces will participate in the parade, symbolising the nations’ shared values and mutual respect.
President Prabowo’s visit underscores a vision for deepened collaboration and a stronger partnership between these two great nations.
