External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar deepened India’s diplomatic and strategic outreach in Europe with a packed day of engagements in Copenhagen on Wednesday. His visit saw key meetings with Danish leadership, reaffirmed mutual efforts to fight terrorism, and included outreach to other international partners like Bahrain and Montenegro.
A major highlight was Jaishankar’s bilateral meeting with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, where he lauded Denmark’s support for India’s fight against terrorism and hailed the strength of their evolving partnership.
“Delighted to meet FM Lars Lokke Rasmussen in Copenhagen this evening. Denmark’s strong solidarity and support on combatting terrorism has been truly commendable. Our wide-ranging conversation on bilateral ties and global issues testifies to the strength of our relationship,” Jaishankar posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met Soren Gade, Speaker of the Danish Parliament, and expressed appreciation for Denmark’s unwavering solidarity with India on terrorism-related matters. “Appreciate his solidarity as India resolutely combats terrorism. Also value his sustained support for building India-Denmark relations,” he noted.
Further strengthening economic cooperation, Jaishankar held talks with Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov. The ministers discussed expanding trade and investment ties, with Jaishankar emphasising the potential for “deepening existing areas of cooperation and exploring new possibilities.” Photos shared by the EAM underscored the cordiality and ambition guiding the discussion.
In a parallel diplomatic engagement, Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. The two leaders shared concerns about global terrorism and agreed on the urgent need for unified efforts against it. “Appreciate the telecon with FM Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani of Bahrain. Discussed the challenge posed by terrorism and the need to combat it resolutely,” Jaishankar posted on X.
The EAM also extended greetings to the people of Montenegro on their Independence Day, recalling his meeting with Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2024. “Warm greetings to DPM & FM Ervin Ibrahimovic, the Government and the people of Montenegro on their Independence Day. Deeply value our friendship and cooperation,” he said, alongside a shared photo of their earlier meeting.
Jaishankar’s visit to Denmark followed a successful two-day stop in the Netherlands from May 19 to 20. Upon arrival in Copenhagen, he was warmly received by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The leaders discussed the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership, a landmark bilateral initiative launched in 2020 focused on renewable energy, sustainability, and innovation.
“Thank PM Mette Frederiksen for warmly receiving me in Copenhagen this evening. Conveyed the personal greetings of PM Narendra Modi. Thank Denmark for its solidarity and support in combating terrorism. Value PM Frederiksen’s guidance to take forward our Green Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar shared.
The minister later met with members of the Indian diaspora in Denmark. He applauded their role in building cultural and economic bridges between the two countries. “They hold the Indian flag high in Denmark and shape our positive image in this country,” he stated.
Jaishankar’s European tour, covering the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany from May 19 to 24, aims to consolidate India’s partnerships across sectors including green technology, defence, innovation, and counterterrorism. His engagements in Denmark reflect a maturing relationship built on mutual values, economic synergy, and a shared commitment to global peace and sustainability.
