Kenyan Activist Boniface Mwangi Declares 2027 Presidential Bid

This is not Mwangi’s first attempt to enter politics. In 2017, he contested a parliamentary seat but was unsuccessful….reports Asian Lite News

Prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, positioning himself as a champion for the country’s frustrated youth.

Mwangi, long recognised as a fierce critic of corruption and human rights abuses, said Kenya’s leaders had failed the people, urging young citizens to “take the country back into our hands.”

Mwangi’s presidential bid follows years of grassroots activism and high-profile protests that have galvanised thousands across Kenya. His outspoken advocacy has earned him both admiration and hostility, often placing him at odds with the authorities. In July, he faced charges over alleged possession of teargas canisters and a rifle round, accusations he denies.

This is not Mwangi’s first attempt to enter politics. In 2017, he contested a parliamentary seat but was unsuccessful. His latest move marks an ambitious step from activist to presidential hopeful in a race that is already drawing seasoned contenders.

Among those expected to run are Senator Okiya Omtatah, former Chief Justice David Maraga, and President William Ruto, who is seeking a second term. The question now is whether Mwangi can convert his street-level credibility into the political momentum needed to challenge Kenya’s entrenched establishment.
