Organ harvesting: Global pressure on Beijing grows

A global petition backed by over half a million people urges G7 nations to act against alleged forced organ harvesting in China and push for coordinated accountability….reports Asian Lite News

A growing global movement calling for action against alleged forced organ harvesting in China has crossed a significant milestone, with more than half a million people worldwide endorsing a petition urging the Group of Seven and other governments to take coordinated action.

According to a report by The Epoch Times, the petition has attracted 505,970 signatures from supporters across 34 countries as of December 15. The initiative was launched in July 2024 by Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting and the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China, two organisations that have campaigned for years to bring international attention to the issue.

The petition calls on the governments of the G7 countries – the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom – along with Argentina, Australia, India, Israel, Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan, to formally condemn and act against what the groups describe as systematic organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience by the Chinese Communist government.

The alleged abuses are said to predominantly affect detained Falun Gong practitioners, as well as Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities held in China’s detention system. Campaigners argue that these practices represent one of the most serious human rights violations of recent decades and require a unified international response.

In recent weeks, momentum behind the campaign has accelerated, with hundreds of lawmakers across different countries committing to promote legislation aimed at banning forced organ harvesting and preventing complicity in transplant abuse. Organisers say the growing political engagement reflects rising awareness and public concern, driven in part by the scale of global support demonstrated through the petition.

Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting said the campaign would continue well beyond its initial target, with organisers now aiming to collect one million signatures by June 2026. They stressed that the petition is designed not only to raise awareness, but also to translate public concern into concrete government action.

DAFOH executive director Dr Torsten Trey said the initiative was deliberately directed at sovereign governments and senior decision-makers. He said the aim was to make clear that public opinion across democratic societies demands an end to what campaigners describe as transplant abuses carried out under state authority.

“To witness this international support is encouraging,” Trey was quoted as saying by The Epoch Times. “Not only do we raise awareness about China’s 25 years of persecution against Falun Gong, but we also create a platform for individuals to actively participate in ending it, one signature at a time.”

The petition draws heavily on findings from the London-based China Tribunal, an independent people’s tribunal that concluded in 2019 that forced organ harvesting had taken place in China on a large scale, with Falun Gong practitioners identified as the primary victims. The tribunal’s conclusions, though rejected by Beijing, have been widely cited by human rights advocates and lawmakers calling for accountability.

Trey noted that his organisation has a long history of petitioning international institutions on the issue. Between 2012 and 2018, DAFOH ran a global campaign addressed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which attracted more than three million participants. However, he said that effort ultimately failed to produce any verifiable action due to what he described as a complex web of institutional rules and political constraints.

Learning from that experience, organisers say the current campaign has been designed to directly engage national governments and legislatures, rather than relying solely on multilateral institutions. Trey said it took three months to establish the present petition framework, but stressed that it would continue regardless of changes in political leadership across the countries involved.

Given the speed at which signatures have been collected so far, campaigners are confident the movement will continue to grow. Trey expressed optimism that millions of people could ultimately add their names, reflecting a broad desire among citizens of democratic societies to see an end to the alleged abuses.

“Every freedom-loving individual and every person of faith desires to see this horrific and gruesome persecution come to an end,” he said.

The petition urges leaders of the 14 targeted countries to issue a united public statement condemning forced organ harvesting and demanding its immediate cessation. It also calls for a coordinated action plan, including measures to prevent citizens from receiving transplants in China, the suspension of transplant-related partnerships, annual parliamentary hearings, and formal investigations aimed at establishing accountability.

Campaigners say the half-million signature milestone demonstrates that the issue has moved beyond advocacy circles and into mainstream public concern, increasing pressure on governments to respond.
