Tesla recalls over 46,000 Cybertrucks over safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Thursday

US safety regulators have ordered a recall of nearly all Tesla Cybertrucks on the road, citing a defect that could pose a serious hazard to drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Thursday, affecting 46,096 Cybertrucks from the 2024 and 2025 model years. The issue involves an exterior stainless steel panel running along both sides of the windshield, which can detach while driving and create a dangerous road hazard.

The problem stems from a structural adhesive used to bind the panel, which may be vulnerable to environmental factors, the NHTSA said. Tesla will reinforce the attachment using an improved adhesive and additional support, offering the fix free of charge. Owners will receive notification letters by May 19, 2025.

The recall follows viral social media videos showing people easily pulling the panels off Cybertrucks with their hands. Tesla became aware of the defect earlier this year, according to the NHTSA order.

This marks the eighth recall for the Cybertruck since deliveries began in late 2023. Previous recalls have addressed issues such as faulty windshield wipers, a display screen defect, and an accelerator pedal that could get stuck.

The recall comes at a challenging time for Tesla, which has faced mounting setbacks under President Donald Trump’s administration. Since Trump appointed Elon Musk to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Tesla facilities, charging stations, and vehicles have been targeted in attacks.

Last month, prosecutors in Colorado charged a woman for allegedly throwing Molotov cocktails at Tesla dealerships and vandalising property with anti-Tesla graffiti. In South Carolina, a man was arrested last week for allegedly setting fire to Tesla charging stations, with authorities linking him to writings critical of the government and DOGE.

Beyond these issues, Tesla is struggling against increasing competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. The company’s stock has plunged 42% in 2025, reflecting investor concerns over declining sales.

Cybertruck owners seeking more information on the recall can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or the NHTSA at 888-327-4236.
