Trump to begin high-stakes Asia tour

During the visit, the US President will also be involved in a signing ceremony with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand…reports Asian Lite News

US President Donald Trump is set to launch a three-nation diplomatic and economic tour of Asia starting this Friday, with Malaysia as the first stop. The White House confirmed that Trump will attend the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on October 26–27 before proceeding to Japan and South Korea, where a pivotal meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for October 30.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Trump will arrive in Malaysia on Sunday morning, joining leaders from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partner countries. Trump will participate in the expanded bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday afternoon, marking a return to the ASEAN stage after missing summits in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

During the visit, the US President will also be involved in a signing ceremony with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand, who were recently embroiled in a brief border conflict in July that claimed lives and displaced many. Trump is expected to engage in a working dinner with US-ASEAN leaders, focusing on trade talks, peace dialogues, and the ongoing tensions between the US and China.

After Malaysia, Trump will proceed to Japan to meet new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where trade agreements, security cooperation, and regional economic partnerships will be on the agenda. He will then travel to South Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Gyeongju, meet President Lee Jae Myung, and address top business leaders.

The tour will culminate in a crucial bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where discussions will centre on trade tensions, rare earth exports, and cooperation on fentanyl regulation. The White House emphasised that Trump’s engagements aim to negotiate favourable trade deals, reduce tariffs, and strengthen US exports, signalling a strategic recalibration of America’s approach to Asia.

As Trump navigates high-stakes diplomacy across multiple Asian capitals, analysts suggest the tour could reshape regional trade dynamics and set the stage for renewed US influence in Asia-Pacific economic and security affairs.
