Turkish, Syrian presidents discuss security, economic cooperation

Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye’s support for Syria’s peaceful transition, including the establishment of state structures and drafting of a new constitution.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa reaffirmed their determination to fully restore bilateral ties and enhance cooperation in security and economic sectors.

During talks in Ankara, Erdogan emphasized Turkiye’s readiness to support the reconstruction of war-torn Syrian cities and reiterated a commitment to countering terrorist groups, including the Islamic State and Kurdish People’s Protection Units, which Turkiye considers the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

Turkey and Syria have pledged to restore diplomatic ties, strengthen security collaboration, and revive economic cooperation, with leaders expressing optimism for regional peace and stability.

He expressed optimism for peace in the region, saying solidarity with Syria would create a climate free from terrorism. Both leaders stressed the importance of enhancing economic ties in sectors such as trade, civil aviation, energy, health, and education. Al-Sharaa underscored the need to revive commercial ties to boost Syria’s economy and invited Erdogan to visit Damascus.

Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye’s support for Syria’s peaceful transition, including the establishment of state structures and drafting of a new constitution.

Al-Sharaa, who arrived in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, continued his diplomatic efforts by meeting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss regional affairs and Syria’s future.
