UAE–Canada seal big investment push

UAE and Canada seal a sweeping new chapter in ties as leaders sign investment accords and unveil a US$50bn framework to power innovation, development, and global stability….reports Asian Lite News

The United Arab Emirates and Canada reaffirmed their deepening strategic partnership on Thursday as UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan hosted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Abu Dhabi for high-level talks centred on investment, innovation, and shared global priorities. The meeting, held at Qasr Al Shati, marked a significant moment in the two nations’ five-decade relationship, underscoring their intention to elevate cooperation across multiple sectors amid a rapidly shifting global landscape.

Sheikh Mohamed welcomed the Canadian leader on his official visit to the Emirates, expressing confidence that the visit would inject fresh momentum into an already robust bilateral relationship. The UAE President praised the trajectory of UAE–Canada ties, describing the partnership as a model for constructive international cooperation that supports peace, development, and prosperity on both regional and global levels. He noted that the UAE and Canada have consistently aligned on key issues, particularly those related to sustainable development, multilateral engagement, and stability.

Over the course of their discussions, both sides highlighted a shared resolve to expand collaboration in fields central to their national development strategies. Investment, technology, artificial intelligence, clean energy, climate action, education, and cultural exchange featured prominently in talks, reflecting the increasingly diversified nature of UAE–Canada engagement. Both leaders stressed that the moment calls for agile and forward-looking partnerships capable of addressing global economic transitions, supply-chain transformations, and rapid advances in emerging technologies.

In addition to bilateral issues, Sheikh Mohamed and Prime Minister Carney exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern. They reiterated their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, stability, and conflict resolution, emphasising the importance of cooperative global frameworks at a time of mounting geopolitical uncertainty. For the UAE and Canada, which have both built reputations as reliable advocates of diplomacy and multilateralism, the talks signalled continued alignment on global priorities ranging from humanitarian relief to sustainable growth.

A major milestone of the visit was the signing of a landmark agreement on the protection and promotion of investment. The pact is intended to strengthen economic cooperation and facilitate long-term, strategic investment flows between the two countries. It was signed on behalf of the UAE by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and on behalf of Canada by Prime Minister Carney. The agreement accompanies a memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation, further anchoring a new chapter in economic engagement between the two governments.

Khaled OKs $50b Mega Deal

The UAE’s emphasis on economic diplomacy was further reinforced when Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, approved the launch of an expansive new investment framework under the directives of the UAE President. Announced during the Canadian Prime Minister’s visit, the framework authorises the UAE Government to invest up to US$50 billion in key strategic sectors in Canada. Among the fields identified for investment are energy, artificial intelligence, logistics, mining, and other critical industries considered vital to national and global economic resilience.

Sheikh Khaled launched the framework in the presence of Prime Minister Carney and Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment, alongside senior Emirati and Canadian officials. The initiative positions the UAE as a major long-term investor in Canada and reflects both countries’ desire to deepen economic integration while advancing shared development ambitions.

The scale of the new investment commitment marks a significant step beyond existing UAE engagement in Canada. As of 2024, foreign direct investment stock from the UAE in Canada stood at US$8.8 billion, while Canadian investment stock in the UAE reached US$242 million. The new US$50 billion framework signals a transformative shift, potentially recasting the UAE as one of Canada’s most prominent international partners in sectors poised for dramatic growth.

For both nations, the announcements represent not only expanded economic alignment but also a broader affirmation that global partnerships must be both strategic and adaptive. As the UAE continues to build its profile as a leading global investor, and Canada sharpens its focus on innovation-driven growth, the meeting in Abu Dhabi underscores a shared optimism: that deeper cooperation can yield prosperity for their peoples while contributing to stability and progress far beyond their borders.
