UN Backs Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace

The White House said Aliyev and Pashinyan also signed bilateral economic agreements with the United States, aiming to unlock the potential of the South Caucasus in trade

UN welcomes peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, brokered by the United States and signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres commended the leaders’ commitment to dialogue and confidence-building, and praised the role of US President Donald Trump in facilitating the accord.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a historic joint declaration for peace after decades of bitter conflict and significant loss of life, with Trump hosting both leaders in Washington. “For more than 35 years, Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought a bitter conflict that resulted in tremendous suffering for both nations… Many tried to find a resolution… and they were unsuccessful. With this Accord, we’ve finally succeeded in making peace,” Trump said.

The White House said Aliyev and Pashinyan also signed bilateral economic agreements with the United States, aiming to unlock the potential of the South Caucasus in trade, transit, energy, infrastructure, and technology, creating new opportunities for American businesses and people.

Aliyev described the day as one that “will be remembered by the people of Azerbaijan with a feeling of pride and gratitude to President Trump.” He credited Trump with resolving conflicts in Asia, Africa, and now the South Caucasus within months, saying, “We will turn the page of standoff, confrontation, and bloodshed, and provide a bright and safe future for our children.”

Pashinyan wrote on social media that the peace deal would pave the way for peace, prosperity, and development in the South Caucasus. “Today’s declaration signed by myself, President of Azerbaijan, and President Donald Trump who also witnessed this historic development gives confidence that we are opening a chapter of peace, prosperity, security and economic cooperation in the South Caucasus,” he posted. He added that initiating the treaty would help end decades of conflict, and that the opening of transport links, including the TRIPP — Trump Road for Peace & Prosperity — would unlock strategic economic opportunities with long-term benefits.

In July, Aliyev and Pashinyan had held talks in Abu Dhabi, agreeing to advance efforts toward normalising relations.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the peace agreement between its northern neighbours, while warning about foreign interference near shared borders. In a statement, Tehran said peace and stability in the South Caucasus benefits all regional countries, and called the finalisation of the peace agreement an important step toward sustainable peace. However, it expressed concern about “negative consequences of any foreign interference in any way or form, especially in proximity to common borders, that would compromise sustainable regional security and stability.”

Iran said it was ready to continue “constructive” cooperation with Azerbaijan and Armenia based on mutual interests, aiming to ensure peace, stability, and economic development in the region through bilateral and regional initiatives.

Armenia and Azerbaijan, at odds over the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh region since 1988, have engaged in peace talks since a 1994 ceasefire, though clashes have flared periodically. The new accord is seen as a milestone in bringing an end to one of the longest-running disputes in the post-Soviet space.
