UK appoints special envoy for women

The UK government’s Plan for Change, which forms the foundation of this initiative, is designed to foster a strong economy by creating opportunities for working women

In a landmark move aimed at accelerating progress towards gender equality, the UK Foreign Secretary has announced the appointment of Harriet Harman as the new UK Special Envoy for Women and Girls. Harriet Harman, a long-standing advocate for women’s rights, will officially began her tenure on International Women’s Day. This appointment underscores the government’s commitment to empowering women and girls both domestically and internationally.

The UK government’s Plan for Change, which forms the foundation of this initiative, is designed to foster a strong economy by creating opportunities for working women. The plan encompasses a wide range of initiatives, from breaking down barriers to opportunity and enhancing safety to rebuilding public services and delivering inclusive growth across the country. The government recognizes that supporting stability overseas is integral to achieving these goals, and Harriet Harman’s role as Special Envoy will be pivotal in this regard.

Harriet Harman brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in advocating for women’s rights. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal champion for issues such as women’s political representation, maternity rights, and tackling violence against women and girls. In her previous role as Solicitor General, Harman spearheaded a successful campaign to prioritize tackling domestic violence. This led to the introduction of the Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Act, which ensured more effective prosecutions for domestic violence and established a network of 60 specialist domestic violence courts.

In her new capacity as Special Envoy, Harriet Harman will coordinate efforts across the globe to ensure that women and girls are empowered and their rights protected. Her responsibilities will include advocating for sexual and reproductive health and rights, ensuring access to education, and combating gender-based violence. Harman’s appointment is expected to galvanize international efforts to address these critical issues, leveraging her expertise and influence to drive meaningful change.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed his enthusiasm for Harman’s appointment, stating, “Accelerating action on equality for women and girls is vital to delivering the global economic growth we need and a safer, more secure world. Harriet has spent her career championing women’s rights and gender equality. Her record of achievement and personal commitment make her a formidable advocate.”

Minister for International Development Baroness Chapman also praised Harman, calling her a “legend on women’s rights” and a pioneer and inspiration to women in the UK and around the world. “I am thrilled she has been appointed Special Envoy, and I look forward to working with her on protecting hard-won rights and creating more opportunities for women,” Baroness Chapman said.

Harriet Harman, in her new role, emphasized the ongoing struggle for gender equality. “Over the last decades we have made tremendous strides towards ending women’s inequality,” she acknowledged. “But the job is far from done. Women and girls are still not equal, and many still face oppression, violence, and discrimination.” Harman expressed her honor at being appointed and her commitment to driving this important work forward.

International Women’s Day 2025 will be marked by a renewed commitment to action. The UK government has pledged to accelerate progress in changing women’s lives, both through domestic policies and international advocacy. Harriet Harman’s appointment is a significant step in this direction, signaling the government’s dedication to empowering women and girls globally.

As Harriet Harman takes up her new role, the UK is poised to play a leading role in the global movement for gender equality. The government’s comprehensive approach, combining domestic initiatives with international advocacy, is expected to create a ripple effect that will benefit women and girls around the world. With Harriet Harman at the helm, the UK is sending a clear message: the fight for gender equality is a priority, and the government is committed to making meaningful progress.

The appointment of Harriet Harman as the UK Special Envoy for Women and Girls is a testament to the UK government’s dedication to gender equality. As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, this move serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of continued advocacy and action. Harriet Harman’s experience, passion, and commitment make her the ideal candidate to lead this charge, and her work is expected to have a profound impact on the lives of women and girls both in the UK and around the globe.
