With the April 9 Assembly elections approaching, the Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a high-intensity campaign in Kerala, deploying its top national leadership in a determined bid to secure a historic foothold in the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead from the front with two whirlwind tours across key districts, addressing public rallies and energising party cadres. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with several Chief Ministers and senior leaders, is also expected to campaign extensively, underlining the party’s strategic focus on Kerala.
The BJP’s campaign is centred on high-visibility outreach in politically crucial regions such as Kasargod, Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Thrissur. Party leaders believe that sustained engagement at the grassroots level, coupled with a strong national presence, could help translate recent gains into electoral success.
A key source of confidence for the party is actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi’s decisive victory in Thrissur during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he won by a margin exceeding 70,000 votes. The BJP also made significant inroads by securing control of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in the December local body polls, marking another milestone in a state where it has traditionally struggled.
However, the electoral landscape remains challenging. While the BJP recorded a 15.64 per cent vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, this dipped slightly to 14.71 per cent in the 2025 local body polls. Despite this, the party highlights its second-place finish in nine constituencies in the 2021 Assembly elections as evidence of growing acceptance among voters.
Kerala’s complex demographic composition continues to be a crucial factor. With minorities, including Muslims and Christians, making up around 42 per cent of the population, the BJP is focusing on targeted outreach to community leaders and broader social groups.
As campaigning gathers momentum, the BJP’s aggressive push reflects a clear strategy—to convert incremental gains into a breakthrough moment in Kerala politics.
