Traditional craftsmanship stepped into the international spotlight as a cultural heritage fashion show at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 showcased the rich artistry of Miao embroidery, batik and silver craftsmanship.

The models appeared in elaborate ensembles featuring colourful Miao embroidery and hand-crafted batik fabrics, complemented by finely worked silver accessories. Together, the elements created a striking blend of traditional artistry and contemporary fashion presentation.

Miao embroidery is known for its vivid colours, intricate patterns and symbolic motifs, with designs reflecting elements of local culture, nature and traditional life. The craft has been preserved across generations and remains an important part of Miao cultural heritage.

Batik, another traditional textile technique, adds distinctive patterns to fabric through a process that combines wax-resist decoration and dyeing. Paired with silver ornaments, the textiles gave the runway presentation a strong visual connection to the craftsmanship of Guizhou villages.

The fashion show formed part of WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, which began on September 22 and has brought young competitors from around the world to compete in a wide range of vocational skills.

WorldSkills is an international platform that promotes excellence in vocational education and skills. The Shanghai edition features more than 1,400 young competitors from more than 60 countries and regions, competing across 64 skill competitions.

Beyond the competition floor, the cultural fashion presentation offered an opportunity to highlight the relationship between traditional craftsmanship, creativity and skilled work.

The event also placed India’s growing presence in the international skills arena in the spotlight. India sent its largest-ever WorldSkills contingent this year, with 70 young competitors competing across 63 skill categories.

India’s performance at recent international competitions has also shown progress. The country rose from 29th place in 2015 to 13th at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, where it won four Bronze Medals and 12 Medallions for Excellence. India also ranked eighth in Asia at WorldSkills Asia 2025.

The Shanghai competition officially opened at the World Expo Cultural Centre, with the Indian contingent joining competitors from across the globe.

With traditional embroidery, batik and silverwork taking centre stage alongside modern vocational skills, the fashion showcase demonstrated how craftsmanship can connect cultural heritage with an international audience.

The presentation offered more than a display of clothing. It brought centuries-old techniques into a contemporary setting, allowing the artistry of Guizhou’s Miao communities to become part of a global celebration of skill and creativity.
