Early counting trends in Assam show BJP leading strongly while Congress state chief Gaurav Gogoi trails in Jorhat amid tight security vote counting…reports Asian Lite News Desk
In a setback for the Congress in Assam, party state president Gaurav Gogoi was trailing in the Jorhat Assembly constituency against BJP rival Hitendra Nath Goswami after the fifth round of counting on Monday.
According to official trends, the BJP has secured 23,339 votes, while Congress has polled 15,326 votes so far, giving Goswami a lead of 8,013 votes as counting continues.
The widening margin is being seen as an early setback for the Congress in a key constituency, with the party closely watching further rounds for any possible turnaround.
Counting of votes is underway across Assam under tight security, with clearer trends expected to emerge later in the day.
Early trends show the BJP leading in 98 Assembly seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance is ahead in 25 constituencies.
Polling was held on April 9, with an impressive voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate of more than 2.50 crore.
A total of 722 candidates are in the fray, including 59 women candidates, reflecting a competitive electoral landscape across the state.
The Congress has fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90.
The All India United Democratic Front contested 30 seats, while NDA allies including Asom Gana Parishad and Bodo Peoples’ Front also fielded candidates across several constituencies.
Other parties in the contest include the Aam Aadmi Party, Trinamool Congress, CPI(M), and several independent candidates across 258 seats.
This phase of counting is being closely watched as Assam’s political landscape shows early signs of consolidation around the BJP-led alliance, while the Congress faces pressure in key urban and semi-urban constituencies. Analysts say that while early leads are significant, final outcomes may still shift as postal ballots and later rounds are included. The high voter turnout has also been interpreted as a sign of strong public engagement in the electoral process, with both major alliances claiming confidence in their eventual performance as counting progresses throughout the day. Observers note that the results will be crucial in shaping future alliances and governance dynamics in the state as both ruling and opposition parties await final confirmation from the election commission tally updates over the next several hours and final declaration expected
