Cockroach Janta Party stages its first major street protest, with organisers urging supporters to remain peaceful, reports Asian Lite News Desk
Supporters of the viral youth-led movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) began assembling at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday after organisers announced they had received permission from Delhi Police to hold a peaceful protest focused on examination irregularities, recruitment issues and youth unemployment.
The demonstration, spearheaded by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, marks the movement’s first major on-ground mobilisation after gaining millions of followers online through its satirical criticism of governance, education policies and employment concerns.
In social media posts ahead of the event, Dipke urged supporters to head directly to Jantar Mantar instead of the Parliament Street Police Station, saying police had authorised the gathering. “We can now assemble directly at Jantar Mantar,” a post from the movement’s social media handle stated. Dipke later confirmed his arrival in Delhi and called on participants to carry books and the national flag while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.
“Offer flowers to policemen as a gesture of compassion and gratitude. We have to lead this movement with love and peace,” Dipke wrote on social media before the protest began.
The protest centres on demands for accountability over alleged irregularities in major examinations and recruitment processes. Organisers have also called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing concerns over examination management and opportunities for students and job-seekers.
Authorities have deployed a heavy security presence around central Delhi, with traffic advisories issued for roads surrounding Jantar Mantar and nearby government districts. Commuters have been advised to expect delays and use public transport where possible.
The protest comes after some confusion over permissions, with Delhi Police stating on Friday that no formal request had been received from the group at that stage. However, reports on Saturday indicated that approval had subsequently been granted for the gathering at Jantar Mantar.
The Cockroach Janta Party emerged earlier this year as an online protest movement led largely by young Indians frustrated over employment prospects, examination controversies and broader governance issues. What began as a social media campaign has rapidly evolved into a nationwide phenomenon, making Saturday’s protest a key test of whether its vast digital support can translate into a significant presence on the ground.
