Political tensions have escalated after allegations surfaced regarding land purchases in Ujjain linked to family members of Mohan Yadav, triggering a sharp exchange between opposition parties and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the controversy was being used to target the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister politically. “The BJP has hatched a conspiracy to defame Mohan Yadav,” he said, adding that earlier involvement in real estate business was known and questioning why such issues were being raised now. He further alleged that the ruling party was attempting leadership changes in multiple states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, claims which have not been substantiated.
The allegations stem from media reports suggesting that members of the Chief Minister’s family had acquired significant land holdings in Ujjain, with opposition leaders claiming these could benefit from infrastructure projects. Congress state president Jitu Patwari described the reports as deeply concerning and called for an investigation by a sitting Supreme Court judge, saying the Chief Minister “should answer to the 8 crore people of the state and to the country.”
In response, BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal rejected the allegations, calling them “completely baseless” and accusing the Congress of targeting leaders from backward communities. He cited election affidavits and land records, stating there had been no significant change in declared assets of the Chief Minister or his family since taking office.
Khandelwal also argued that some of the land cited in media reports was acquired before the implementation of local master plans and said certain properties referenced by opposition leaders were not linked to the Chief Minister’s immediate family. He added that the party would present its position in detail and take appropriate steps in response to what it termed misinformation.

The controversy has also drawn political reactions from Uttar Pradesh, with minister Om Prakash Rajbhar accusing the opposition of attempting to deflect attention from its own alleged dealings. He suggested that questions raised by Akhilesh Yadav reflected concerns over potential scrutiny of investments and land transactions linked to opposition figures, claims that have been strongly contested by the Samajwadi Party.
Meanwhile, the BJP has maintained that there is no wrongdoing in the case and that the allegations are politically motivated. The Congress, however, has continued to press for a judicial inquiry, arguing that the matter raises questions of public accountability given the scale of land transactions cited in media reports.
The dispute has now developed into a wider political confrontation involving multiple states, with both sides trading accusations of corruption, conspiracy and misuse of power.
