China’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 5 percent year on year in 2025, meeting the government’s annual growth target of around 5 percent, official data showed on Monday, according to Xinhua.
Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that China’s GDP reached a record 140.1879 trillion yuan (about 20.01 trillion U.S. dollars) last year.
In the fourth quarter, the economy grew 4.5 percent compared with a year earlier and expanded 1.2 percent from the previous quarter, the NBS said.

Despite a complex domestic and external environment, the Chinese economy continued to advance under pressure, making fresh progress in high-quality development, the bureau noted. It added that the main goals and tasks for economic and social development were fully achieved in 2025, marking the successful conclusion of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025).
NBS head Kang Yi said at a press conference that China had faced abrupt changes in the external environment alongside mounting domestic difficulties and challenges. He noted that more proactive and effective macroeconomic policies were adopted to offset external shocks and stabilise the foundations of development amid headwinds.
Kang added that for a super-large economy like China, achieving such stable growth was particularly challenging given the range of intertwined risks and pressures it faced, Xinhua reported.
