Global Spotlight Returns To Uyghur Crisis

The World Uyghur Congress intensified its international campaign across Europe and Canada, urging tougher action against China over allegations of forced labour and repression…reports Asian Lite News

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has released its monthly brief outlining an international advocacy campaign across Europe and Canada focused on China’s treatment of Uyghurs, including allegations of genocide, transnational repression and forced labour linked to East Turkistan.

As part of the month long campaign, WUC representatives held meetings in Belgium and Germany with European Union officials, Members of the European Parliament and policymakers from EU member states, urging stronger and more coordinated action against Beijing’s policies targeting Uyghurs.

The organisation called for tighter safeguards to prevent products allegedly linked to forced labour from entering global supply chains and urged European governments to confront what it described as the systematic persecution of Uyghur communities.

The campaign culminated in a European Parliament resolution criticising China’s “Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress”, which rights groups say institutionalises forced assimilation and cultural erasure in Uyghur and Tibetan regions.

In Canada, WUC Vice President appeared before the Canadian Subcommittee on International Human Rights to testify on what the group described as China’s transnational repression tactics targeting Uyghur diaspora communities abroad.

The testimony highlighted allegations of intimidation, surveillance and threats faced by Uyghurs living overseas, while calling on Ottawa to strengthen protections and pursue accountability measures against Chinese authorities.

Senior WUC officials also met Canadian lawmakers to discuss proposed legislation aimed at preventing goods allegedly produced through forced labour from entering Canadian markets.

During a press conference on Bill C 251, WUC representatives stressed the need for stricter enforcement mechanisms to block imports linked to alleged human rights abuses in East Turkistan.

Meanwhile, former WUC President Dolkun Isa addressed a United Nations forum in New York City under the Human Rights Dialogue framework, where Chinese representatives reportedly denounced him as a “separatist” and “terrorist” after he raised concerns over the Uyghur issue.

Later in Berlin, Isa spoke at the Hertie School on China’s controversial Ethnic Unity Law, warning that the legislation could formalise longstanding repression and accelerate the forced assimilation of Uyghurs and Tibetans.

The event brought together academics, legal experts and human rights advocates to discuss the wider implications of Beijing’s policies on international law and human rights, according to ANI.
