India-Bangladesh ties back in focus

India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth in Delhi….reports Asian Lite News Desk

India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth in New Delhi, amid efforts by India and Bangladesh to strengthen bilateral relations.

Trivedi made an unscheduled visit to New Delhi on Monday and met Modi on Tuesday at around 1pm, according to sources. He later held talks with General Seth.

The Indian Army said the meeting between Trivedi and the Chief of Army Staff focused on bilateral cooperation and ways to strengthen defence ties between the two countries.

“Shri Dinesh Trivedi, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, interacted with General Dhiraj Seth, COAS, today. The interaction focussed on issues of India-Bangladesh bilateral cooperation and measures for strengthening Defence ties,” the Indian Army said in a post on X.

The meetings come as India and Bangladesh work towards restoring ties following a period of strained relations after the ousting of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. India has granted asylum to Hasina.

The latest diplomatic engagements follow comments by Bangladesh’s outgoing High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, who recently reflected on his tenure in New Delhi and efforts to maintain bilateral relations.

“During the eighteen months’ stint in India as Bangladesh Envoy, tried to quietly steady and advance Bangladesh-India relations premised on mutual trust – dignity – shared benefits, to endure for a long haul, in ‘shared interests’. Not walking conventional paths of diplomacy, trying to touch the chords with people,” he posted on X.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also acknowledged Hamidullah’s contribution to India-Bangladesh relations and conveyed his best wishes for his future endeavours.

On September 30, India and Bangladesh reaffirmed their longstanding bilateral ties and cooperation during a meeting between India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh and Bangladesh’s Minister of Liberation War Affairs, Ahmed Aazam Khan, in Dhaka.

“The two sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and reaffirmed the longstanding ties and cooperation between India and Bangladesh,” the Indian High Commission in Dhaka posted on X.

The two countries have also been discussing preparations for a possible meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Modi.

Trivedi stressed the need for thorough preparations by both sides before such a meeting and said there was no need to rush, according to local media reports.

The meetings in New Delhi underline ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain communication between the two countries and address areas of mutual interest, including bilateral and defence cooperation.
