Indian students in Iran are preparing to leave the country as safety concerns grow and evacuation plans begin to take shape. Some are arranging travel through neighbouring countries while others have booked commercial flights in the coming days…reports Asian Lite News
Indian students studying in Iran have begun making arrangements to leave the country amid growing safety concerns, with the first batch expected to depart for the Armenia border on Thursday as evacuation plans gradually take shape.
According to information shared with students, those enrolled at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBUMS) have been offered two evacuation routes — either through Armenia or Azerbaijan. Authorities and student groups have been coordinating to ensure that those willing to leave can travel safely to the designated exit points.
The planned movements come as students across several Iranian universities monitor the situation and consider options for returning home. Communication between student representatives, local authorities and support groups has been ongoing as arrangements are organised in stages.
Several students, however, have opted to return to India by commercial flights rather than crossing land borders immediately. A large number have booked Flydubai flights scheduled for March 15, March 16 and the following days, which will allow them to travel back to India once they reach nearby international airports.
For students based in Shiraz, local authorities have suggested a separate route. At Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, where 86 Indian medical students are currently studying, students have been advised that they can travel via Shiraz–Qom–Baku Airport in Baku, Azerbaijan, from which they can board international flights to India.
The arrangements reflect rising anxiety among Indian students studying in different parts of Iran. Many have been seeking information on possible travel routes and logistical assistance as they consider leaving the country.
Student organisations have also been involved in gathering information and supporting those who wish to return home. Mohammad Momin Khan, President of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) J&K, said he has been receiving calls from Indian students studying at Golestan University of Medical Sciences, Kerman University of Medical Sciences, and Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.
According to him, a number of students have been requesting evacuation arrangements, as they remain concerned about the overall situation in the country.
“Students are calling continuously and requesting evacuation as they believe no part of Iran is currently safe,” Khan said.
He also referred to the involvement of political representatives who have been in contact with students and have helped to raise their concerns with authorities.
“Dr Khan also expressed gratitude to Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Member of Parliament, for his constant support and coordination in addressing the concerns of Indian students and assisting in efforts to facilitate their safe return,” the statement said.
As preparations continue, several groups of students are expected to begin travelling towards exit points over the coming days. Those planning to depart through neighbouring countries are coordinating transport to border crossings and airports, while others are waiting for scheduled commercial flights.
Families of students in India have been closely following developments, hoping that arrangements for safe passage will continue to improve as more students seek to return home in the days ahead.
