Indian Naval sail training ship INS Sudarshini has made a landmark appearance at SAIL Boston 250, with the Consulate General of India in Boston highlighting the vessel’s participation as a symbol of India’s maritime heritage, naval capabilities and strengthening India-US maritime cooperation.
The ship’s participation was marked during a Captain’s Reception held onboard INS Sudarshini, where the Consulate General of India in Boston conducted a media briefing.
Consul General Raghuram S. addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of INS Sudarshini’s presence at the international maritime event commemorating the 250th anniversary of US Independence.
According to the Consulate, the vessel is the only naval tall ship participating from Asia and the wider Indian Ocean region at the event. The ship sailed for five and a half months to reach the US East Coast as part of its participation in the anniversary celebrations.
The mission highlighted the ship’s sailing capabilities, noting that INS Sudarshini sailed using its masts for 18 consecutive days, demonstrating its operational and training value.

The Consulate also highlighted the vessel’s role in showcasing India’s indigenous shipbuilding expertise. It said every part, equipment and fabric used in INS Sudarshini was designed and manufactured in India, reflecting the country’s growing capabilities in ship construction.
INS Sudarshini serves as a training vessel for Indian Naval cadets, providing them with practical sailing experience and maritime training.
Earlier, announcing the vessel’s arrival in Boston, the Consulate General of India posted: “Ahoy Boston—Sudarshini arrives! INS SUDARSHINI entered historic port of #Boston flying in the majestic Parade of Sails as part of SAIL Boston 250.”
