Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Thursday met Rear Admiral Anita William, Commander of the Australian Fleet, at HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney, with the two sides discussing ways to strengthen maritime cooperation between India and Australia.
The talks focused on the evolving capabilities of the Australian Navy and opportunities to deepen operational cooperation between the two navies, the Indian Navy said.
“Discussions covered the Australian Navy’s evolving fleet capabilities & future inductions, along with opportunities for enhancing interoperability and operational interaction between the two Navies. CNS was also given a familiarisation tour of HMAS Kuttabul, covering its fleet infrastructure and operational capabilities,” the Indian Navy posted on X.
Admiral Swaminathan began a three-day official visit to Australia on Wednesday, with the visit aimed at further strengthening cooperation between the two navies.
The Indian Navy said the visit, which runs from September 9 to 11, would include engagements with senior Australian defence leadership. Discussions are focused on operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, training, professional exchanges and emerging maritime capabilities.
“Advancing India-Australia Maritime Partnership. Adm Krishna Swaminathan, CNS, is on an official visit to Australia from 9-11 Sep 26 and will engage with senior defence leadership. Discussions will focus on further strengthening Indian Navy-Aus Navy cooperation with emphasis on operational interaction, interoperability and information sharing, training, professional exchanges and emerging maritime capabilities,” the Indian Navy wrote on X.
“The visit reflects growing tempo of engagement between the Navies and their resolve towards a secure, stable and resilient Indo-Pacific,” it added.
The Ministry of Defence said the engagements during the visit would provide an opportunity to review ongoing naval cooperation and explore further avenues for strengthening operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, training and professional exchanges.
The visit comes amid growing defence and security ties between India and Australia, including cooperation in maritime security and regional affairs.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Admiral Swaminathan’s visit builds on the momentum in bilateral ties following the third India-Australia Annual Summit held in July and the Second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held in June.
India and Australia have continued to expand their defence relationship, with their navies maintaining regular engagement focused on operational cooperation and maritime security.
Following his engagements in Australia, Admiral Swaminathan is scheduled to travel to New Zealand. He will hold discussions there with senior leadership of the Royal New Zealand Navy and senior New Zealand defence leadership.
The Australia and New Zealand engagements are part of India’s continuing naval outreach and efforts to strengthen professional and operational links with partner countries in the Indo-Pacific.
