Iran has suspended all of its commitments under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States, accusing Washington of breaching the agreement through what Tehran described as aggressive actions, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate.
The announcement was made on Saturday by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, who said the United States had failed to honour its obligations under the memorandum, prompting Tehran to halt implementation of its own commitments.
“We were in negotiations, and unfortunately, the Americans themselves, in violation of their obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding, took these aggressive actions,” Gharibabadi said in response to a question about the future of negotiations with the US.
He added: “For us, the solution now before us is to decisively defend the country and teach a lesson to the aggressors – the US has practically violated and suspended all of its commitments, and we have also suspended our commitments under that Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and are not implementing our commitments.”
The remarks come amid heightened military tensions between Tehran and Washington following a series of attacks and counter-threats targeting strategic infrastructure.
Earlier this week, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned that any US attack on Iranian power plants or bridges would trigger a wide-ranging response against infrastructure across West Asia.
The warning followed Iranian strikes on US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, according to Iranian authorities.
Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for the headquarters, issued the warning in a video message carried by Iranian media in response to recent threats by US President Donald Trump to target Iranian infrastructure if Tehran failed to return to negotiations.
“The powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will crush everything that has still remained intact owing to Iran’s decency,” Zolfaghari said, warning of the consequences should the United States carry out attacks on Iranian infrastructure.
He also said any Iranian response would not be “an equal blow,” but would instead be “more severe, widespread, and devastating than ever.”
Trump has stated that the United States would broaden its military campaign to include Iranian power plants and bridges unless Tehran agrees to resume negotiations.
The US military has conducted several rounds of strikes in Iran’s southern provinces in recent days, saying the operations were launched in response to Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and were intended to “degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping.”
The latest developments further diminish prospects for renewed diplomacy between the two countries, with both sides hardening their positions amid an increasingly volatile regional security environment.
