Jaishankar called on Aliyev on October 23 and conveyed greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a post on X, the minister said he had discussed ways to strengthen relations between the two countries and appreciated Aliyev’s positive sentiments towards the shared effort.
During his visit, Jaishankar is also scheduled to hold talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart to review bilateral ties.
The meeting follows the presentation of credentials by India’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abhay Kumar, to Aliyev on October 16.
According to the Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan, Kumar expressed his commitment to expanding bilateral relations and promoting closer cooperation between the two countries.
The embassy said discussions during the meeting highlighted historical and cultural connections between India and Azerbaijan, which it described as a foundation for contemporary engagement.
Both sides exchanged views on opportunities to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to developing closer relations.
The meeting also referred to discussions between Modi and Aliyev on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek on September 1.
Kumar and Aliyev reiterated their commitment to building on existing ties, historical connections and mutual goodwill to explore further avenues of engagement, the embassy said.
India and Azerbaijan have continued diplomatic exchanges through high-level meetings and multilateral forums.
Last week, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh visited Azerbaijan to attend the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
Jaishankar’s meeting with Aliyev forms part of these ongoing contacts as both countries seek to strengthen their bilateral relationship.
