Jaishankar Meets Outgoing Bangladesh Envoy

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Bangladesh’s outgoing High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah in New Delhi and appreciated his contribution to bilateral ties…reports Asian Lite News Desk

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday met Bangladesh’s outgoing High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, in New Delhi and appreciated his contribution to bilateral relations.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar said in a post on X: “Pleased to received Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah for a farewell call. Appreciate his contribution and wish him all the best in future endeavours.”

Hamidullah assumed charge as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India in April last year. Before taking up the diplomatic assignment in New Delhi, he served as Secretary (West) in Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting came amid recent diplomatic engagements between India and Bangladesh aimed at maintaining bilateral cooperation.

On October 1, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met Bangladesh’s Minister of Liberation War Affairs, Ahmed Aazam Khan, in Dhaka. The two sides discussed matters of mutual interest and reaffirmed longstanding ties and cooperation between the two countries.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a post on X that Trivedi met Khan for a courtesy call and that both sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.

Earlier, on September 30, Trivedi met Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir in Dhaka. Discussions focused on continued cooperation between the neighbouring countries and ways to deepen bilateral engagement.

The Indian High Commission said Trivedi congratulated Kobir on assuming office and that the discussion focused on continued cooperation for mutually beneficial outcomes for the people of India and Bangladesh.

India has also reiterated its desire for a positive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh.

On September 22, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India was ready to discuss bilateral issues through existing structured mechanisms.

“On the trajectory of the India-Bangladesh relationship, we have said this in the past as well, that India desires a positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh. And, we are ready to discuss all issues, bilateral issues, within the structured mechanisms that we have right now. So that is our intent.”

The recent meetings come as both sides continue diplomatic engagement on bilateral matters and cooperation.

The change involving Bangladesh’s High Commissioner also provides an opportunity for both countries to maintain communication through established diplomatic channels.

India and Bangladesh share extensive historical, cultural and economic links, with bilateral engagement covering areas including trade, connectivity, development cooperation and people-to-people ties.

The latest discussions indicate continued diplomatic contact between the two neighbouring countries, with India maintaining that bilateral issues should be addressed through established mechanisms.

Jaishankar’s meeting with Hamidullah was focused on the outgoing envoy’s contribution to bilateral relations, while recent engagements involving Indian officials in Dhaka have centred on continued cooperation and mutual interests.

The Indian government has repeatedly stated its preference for constructive engagement with Bangladesh and for addressing bilateral matters through dialogue.
