Jharkhand woos London investors

Chief Minister Hemant Soren leads Jharkhand’s global outreach with London engagement and Davos debut, spotlighting sustainable growth, investment opportunities and the state’s cultural identity.

Jharkhand’s push to raise its international profile gathered momentum this month as Chief Minister Hemant Soren led high-level engagements in London and made the state’s first-ever appearance at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos.

During his visit to the UK, a reception hosted by the High Commission of India in London brought together members of the Indian diaspora and representatives from British businesses, offering a platform to showcase Jharkhand’s economic and cultural strengths. The event, held at India House, was attended by senior community leaders, entrepreneurs and investors keen to explore new opportunities with one of India’s most resource-rich states.

Soren held detailed interactions with guests, highlighting Jharkhand’s natural beauty, strong tradition of artisanship and growing industrial base. He underlined the state’s focus on green energy, sustainable resource use and responsible industrial development, while also promoting tourism, culture, sports and traditional arts as key pillars of its growth strategy.

The Chief Minister also attended an official tea reception hosted by India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, reinforcing the state’s alignment with broader UK-India partnership priorities. The Office of the Chief Minister said discussions centred on Jharkhand’s contribution to India’s economic growth, heritage collaboration with the UK and potential partnerships in higher education, skills development, sports and critical minerals — sectors seen as central to future bilateral cooperation.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand also debuted at the World Economic Forum in Davos between January 19 and 23, a moment the state government has described as historic as it coincided with 25 years since Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar. Officials said the participation marked a deliberate shift by the state from the periphery of global economic dialogue towards a more confident and visible international presence.

For the first time, the traditional Jharkhand greeting “Johar” echoed through the corridors of the Davos forum, a symbolic assertion of indigenous identity alongside an investment-driven message. The state’s participation was framed around the theme “Growth in Harmony with Nature”, reflecting its ambition to balance economic expansion with environmental stewardship and social responsibility in a region long shaped by mining and forest-based economies.
