India prepares to host Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing as both nations aim to deepen civilisational ties and expand cooperation across trade, connectivity and strategy, reports Asian Lite News Desk
India is set to host Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing for a high-level official visit beginning May 30, with New Delhi signalling that talks will focus on advancing long-standing civilisational and strategic ties between the two neighbours.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit, which runs until June 2, will cover the full spectrum of bilateral relations, including political, economic and connectivity cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold formal talks with Hlaing on June 1.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is looking forward to welcoming the Myanmar leader, noting that discussions will centre on strengthening “friendly, civilisational ties” and exploring avenues for deeper engagement.
Hlaing will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders. In addition to official meetings in New Delhi, he is expected to visit Bodh Gaya, a site of religious and cultural significance, as well as Mumbai for business and industry interactions.
Officials indicated that economic cooperation will form a key pillar of the visit, with a dedicated business component aimed at boosting trade and investment links. The engagement comes as both countries seek to enhance connectivity and regional integration under India’s evolving strategic frameworks.
Myanmar holds a critical position in India’s foreign policy architecture, sitting at the intersection of its ‘Neighbourhood First’, ‘Act East’ and ‘MAHASAGAR’ initiatives. These policies aim to strengthen ties with immediate neighbours, deepen engagement with Southeast Asia, and expand maritime cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.
The MEA said the visit is expected to “further strengthen and deepen the multi-faceted relations between the two countries,” reflecting a shared interest in expanding cooperation across sectors.
The visit follows recent diplomatic exchanges between the two countries. In April, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh travelled to Myanmar to attend Hlaing’s swearing-in ceremony as President and conveyed a message of congratulations from Prime Minister Modi.
During that visit, India reiterated its commitment to supporting Myanmar’s development and strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas benefiting the people of both nations.
Hlaing, who assumed the presidency on April 3, had earlier served as Myanmar’s military chief and played a central role in the country’s political transition in recent years.
Prime Minister Modi and Hlaing also met previously on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Tianjin last year, where they reviewed bilateral ties and discussed future cooperation.
