Iranian officials are set to hold fresh talks with Asim Munir in the capital on Thursday, as both sides review messages exchanged between Iran and the United States after negotiations in Islamabad collapsed on April 12, according to Iran’s state run Tasnim News Agency.
It remains unclear whether Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will be directly involved in Thursday’s meeting with Munir, the report noted.
A day earlier, Araghchi hosted Munir in Tehran, where he praised Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue and highlighted the shared commitment to regional stability amid heightened tensions in West Asia. In a post on X, Araghchi said he was “delighted” to welcome Munir and expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s efforts in hosting talks, calling it a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries.
The visit comes at a critical moment, as diplomatic efforts intensify to revive stalled negotiations between the US and Iran following the inconclusive Islamabad talks. Diplomatic sources said Munir, accompanied by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, is carrying a fresh message from Washington outlining a possible framework for a second round of high level negotiations.
The renewed engagement is being seen as a last attempt to break the deadlock after earlier discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, particularly on Tehran’s nuclear programme and other key sticking points.
The diplomatic push is unfolding against the backdrop of a fragile two week ceasefire and rising regional tensions. US President Donald Trump has signalled that while an extension of the ceasefire is unlikely, a negotiated settlement remains the preferred path forward. He has also expressed optimism that progress could be made within days.
Early indications suggest a second round of direct talks may take place, with Islamabad emerging as a potential venue. US Vice President JD Vance, along with senior officials including special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, is expected to play a central role in the next phase of negotiations.
