Sudan Accuses Ethiopia, UAE Of Airport Drone Strike

Sudan accuses Ethiopia and the UAE of orchestrating drone strikes on Khartoum airport and military facilities as both countries strongly deny involvement…reports Asian Lite News

Sudan has accused neighbouring Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of orchestrating drone strikes on the country’s main airport in the capital, describing the attack as an act of “direct aggression”.

The international airport in Khartoum was hit on Monday along with military installations across the Greater Khartoum area, disrupting a period of relative calm that had followed the Sudanese army’s recapture of large parts of the capital from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last year.

Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem announced that Khartoum had recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia for consultations over the attack.

According to the BBC, Sudan’s army said it possessed “conclusive evidence” that the drones involved in the strike had been launched from Bahir Dar airport in Ethiopia.

Sudanese military officials had earlier accused the RSF of launching air attacks from Ethiopian territory in March. They claimed to have tracked a drone, allegedly linked to the UAE, entering Sudanese airspace from Ethiopia before it was shot down.

A Sudanese army spokesman further alleged that another drone launched from the same airport was connected to Monday’s attack, the BBC reported.

Ethiopia rejected the allegations, calling claims linking it to the airport strike “baseless”. The UAE also denied involvement, saying the accusations were “unfounded” and amounted to “deliberate propaganda” that could undermine efforts to resolve the conflict.

A UAE official said the accusations were “fabrications” intended to shift blame and avoid accountability for developments inside Sudan.

The latest drone attacks came only a week after the first direct international commercial flight in three years landed at Khartoum airport, marking a symbolic step towards normalcy after prolonged conflict.

Following the strikes, Sudanese authorities announced a 72 hour suspension of airport operations.

Reuters had earlier reported that Ethiopia was accused of hosting a training camp for RSF fighters and upgrading the nearby Asosa airport for drone operations, allegedly with backing from the UAE. Both Ethiopia and the UAE denied those claims.

The conflict in Sudan erupted in 2023 between the Sudanese military and the RSF, turning Khartoum airport into one of the war’s main battlegrounds, according to the BBC.Sudan has accused neighbouring Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of orchestrating drone strikes on the country’s main airport in the capital, describing the attack as an act of “direct aggression”.
