US President Donald Trump has urged Pakistan to recognise Israel and establish diplomatic relations under the Abraham Accords, linking the move to broader efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing Iran conflict.
In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump said it “should be mandatory” for Pakistan to sign onto the Abraham Accords, the US backed diplomatic initiative under which several Muslim majority nations formally recognised Israel.
Trump also called on Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye, Egypt and Jordan to join or support the framework as part of what he described as efforts to stabilise the region following the Iran war.
Presenting the proposal as a form of reciprocal cooperation, Trump said the United States had undertaken extensive efforts to manage the conflict and work towards a settlement.
“After all the work done by the United States to try and pull this very complex puzzle together,” Trump wrote, countries in the region should support the Abraham Accords initiative.
The Abraham Accords were launched in 2020 during Trump’s first term in office and initially saw the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain establish diplomatic ties with Israel. Morocco and Sudan later joined the agreement.
The accords are named after the Prophet Abraham, who is recognised in Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have also been affected by the wider regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
Pakistan, however, has historically maintained a strongly adversarial position towards Israel. Islamabad opposed the creation of Israel and has consistently backed Arab nations during conflicts involving the Jewish state.
Pakistan also projects itself as a leading voice for Muslim causes and remains a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the Palestinian territories.
At the United Nations, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has accused Israel of carrying out “mass carnage” against Palestinians and alleged that the use of starvation against civilians could amount to a war crime.
Analysts believe Trump’s demand is likely to face stiff resistance in Pakistan, where public opinion remains largely hostile towards Israel and Islamist groups strongly oppose diplomatic engagement with Tel Aviv.
Trump’s proposal has also added another layer of complexity to discussions surrounding a possible settlement linked to the Strait of Hormuz and broader negotiations involving Iran.
“By copy of this TRUTH, I am asking my Representatives to begin, and successfully complete, the process of signing these Countries into the already Historic Abraham Accord,” Trump wrote.
