US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, reaffirming Washington’s resolve to stand against terrorism as the United States marks the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
“Twenty-five years later, we remember the innocent lives lost on 9/11. We keep their families in our prayers, we will never forget them. We will always stand against terrorism,” Gor said in a post on X.
The attacks killed 2,977 people in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania after 19 al-Qaeda hijackers seized control of four commercial passenger planes.
Two of the aircraft were flown into the World Trade Centre’s Twin Towers in New York. A third plane was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers confronted the hijackers and attempted to regain control of the aircraft.
US President Donald Trump has proclaimed September 11 as Patriot Day to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attacks and honour those who lost their lives.

In a White House proclamation issued on Wednesday, Trump said a quarter of a century had passed since the attacks and noted that an entire generation of Americans had grown up without a living memory of the day.
“The passage of time must never dim what will forever burn bright in the conscience of our Nation,” Trump said, calling for the pledge to “Never Forget” to be renewed across the country.
The President also paid tribute to the 40 passengers and crew members aboard Flight 93 who confronted the hijackers, highlighting the actions of passenger Todd Beamer, who helped lead the effort to retake the aircraft.
Trump described the passengers as patriots whose sacrifice turned the Pennsylvania crash site into “hallowed ground” and a lasting symbol of American resolve.
He also honoured police officers, firefighters, emergency personnel, rescue workers and volunteers who responded to the attacks. According to the proclamation, nearly 100 emergency and first responder agencies took part in rescue and evacuation operations in New York City.
The 9/11 anniversary is being observed across the US with memorial events honouring the victims and those who responded to the attacks.
