Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on Tuesday as she began her two day official visit to India.
Sharing details of the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs said Baerbock commenced her trip by honouring the legacy and ideals of Gandhi at the memorial site in the national capital.
Baerbock arrived in New Delhi on Monday at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Welcoming her visit, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the trip reflected India’s continued and strong engagement with the United Nations.
During her visit, Baerbock is expected to hold high level talks with Jaishankar on a range of multilateral issues of shared interest. Discussions are likely to focus on global cooperation and key international challenges.
According to the MEA, the UNGA President will also participate in an interactive session with representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the governance and regulation of artificial intelligence.
She is further scheduled to meet the United Nations team in India led by Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner. Her visit marks the second major United Nations engagement in India this year after António Guterres attended the AI Impact Summit in February.
Although this is her first visit to India as President of the UN General Assembly, Baerbock has previously visited the country in her role as Germany’s foreign minister. During a visit in 2022, she had described India as a country that would play a major role in shaping the international order of the 21st century, both in the Indo Pacific region and beyond.
She had also praised India’s progress in reducing poverty, saying the country’s success in lifting millions out of extreme poverty demonstrated how democracy, pluralism and freedom could drive economic growth, peace and stability.
Baerbock is expected to travel to China after concluding her engagements in India.
