Vance blames Iran war for Republican election defeat

Vance says Iran conflict, inflation and cost-of-living pressures drove Trump supporters towards Democrats, exposing divisions within the Republican Party…reports Asian Lite News Desk

US Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war with Iran for the Republican Party’s defeat in the midterm elections, saying many voters who supported Donald Trump in 2024 switched their allegiance to Democrats.

In a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, Vance said internal Republican data showed that supporters had turned out in sufficient numbers, but many did not vote for the party.

“The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he wrote.

Vance said Republican analysts had monitored voter turnout and compared the electorate with the coalition that helped Trump return to the White House in 2024.

However, an unnamed data analyst had warned him that strong turnout did not necessarily mean voters would support Republicans.

“Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us,” Vance recalled being told.

He also referred to a pollster who had warned before the election that Republicans could lose the national generic congressional ballot by 13 percentage points.

According to Vance, voters who had moved away from the Republican Party identified four major concerns: ending the Iran war, addressing the cost of living and inflation, putting America first, and changing Washington’s relationship with Israel.

“Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats,” he said.

Vance did not identify the pollster or provide details about the survey’s methodology.

Acknowledging criticism that Republicans had failed to communicate their economic message effectively during the campaign, he maintained that the Iran conflict was the central reason for the defeat.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote.

Trump had also acknowledged the conflict’s impact on the election. Speaking to Fox News, he said Iran was partly responsible for the Republican losses, while defending his decision to launch the military campaign.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump described Iran as one factor behind the results and said he did not regret the military operation.

Vance also warned against attempts by Republicans to blame the defeat on immigration policy or use it to push for amnesty for people living in the country unlawfully.

He said he was open to changes in immigration enforcement, including greater scrutiny of employers hiring undocumented workers, but rejected amnesty as a response to the election outcome.

The Vice President urged disappointed Republican supporters to remain engaged with the party and channel their frustration into future elections.

Democrats secured projected control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to CBS News projections.

The US-Israeli war with Iran began in February and disrupted regional shipping and energy markets. Rising fuel prices and household costs also featured prominently in the election campaign, adding to voter concerns over the economy.
