Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump used their first bilateral meeting in more than a year to reaffirm the strength of the India US partnership, signalling progress on trade negotiations, defence cooperation and regional security challenges.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the G7 outreach sessions in Evian, France, underscored the expanding scope of ties between the two countries, with discussions ranging from economic cooperation and energy security to maritime safety and developments in West Asia.
One of the key outcomes of the talks was the positive outlook on a proposed bilateral trade agreement. Asked about the status of negotiations, Trump said the two sides were “very close” to reaching a deal and praised Modi as one of the toughest negotiators he had encountered.
Defence cooperation also featured prominently. Trump indicated strong US support for India, saying Washington would stand by New Delhi if it came under attack, highlighting the strategic dimension of the partnership.
The leaders also exchanged views on the situation in West Asia. Modi welcomed Trump’s diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting stability in the region and said recent initiatives had renewed hopes for peace and security.

A major area of discussion was the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, with both leaders agreeing that uninterrupted movement through the crucial shipping route was essential for the global economy. For India, the waterway remains vital as a key channel for energy imports.
Modi also raised concerns about the safety of Indian sailors working on international shipping routes, describing their security as a matter of utmost importance. Trump expressed sympathy over the recent deaths of Indian seafarers and praised their contribution.
The meeting further reflected Washington’s recognition of India’s growing influence on the global stage. Asked whether India could play a greater role in West Asia, Trump said India already plays an important role in international affairs and suggested that role would continue to expand.
Trump also indicated that a future visit to India was being planned, recalling his previous trip and expressing interest in returning.
On the issue of skilled Indian professionals working in the United States, Trump struck a positive note, describing Indians as highly talented and emphasising the strong employment links between the two countries.
Energy cooperation emerged as another important pillar of the relationship. Trump signalled support for deeper engagement in the sector, saying India could expand energy cooperation with the United States as both countries seek to strengthen economic ties.
The meeting marked the first formal bilateral engagement between Modi and Trump since their talks in Washington last year. Both leaders emphasised continuity and cooperation in a relationship that has expanded significantly across trade, defence, technology, energy and maritime security.
