President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping had offered China’s assistance in helping reopen the Strait of Hormuz and support efforts to ease tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel.
Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity after meeting Xi in Beijing, Trump said the Chinese leader had made clear that Beijing would not provide military equipment to Tehran during the conflict. “He said he’s not going to give military equipment… he said that strongly,” Trump said.
At the same time, Trump said Xi acknowledged China’s continued reliance on oil imports from the region and its intention to maintain petroleum purchases from Iran. “But at the same time, he said, you know, they buy a lot of their oil there and they’d like to keep doing that,” Trump said.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes for energy supplies, with global markets closely monitoring any disruption linked to rising tensions in the Middle East.
According to Trump, Xi also expressed a willingness to assist efforts aimed at restoring stability and normal shipping operations through the strategic waterway. “But he said, ‘I would love to be a help, if I can be of any help whatsoever,’” Trump said in the interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “He’d like to see the Hormuz strait open. He said, ‘If I can be of any help whatsoever I would like to help.’”

Trump’s comments came after high-level meetings between US and Chinese delegations in Beijing during a closely watched summit between the two leaders.
The remarks from the US president focused largely on China’s position on Iran and regional security, though questions remained about whether Beijing would continue providing other forms of support to Tehran, including intelligence, electronic components, or revenue through oil purchases. Neither side publicly addressed those issues during the summit.
Earlier in the day, Trump described his discussions with Xi and the Chinese delegation as constructive while speaking at a banquet held in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. “We had extremely positive and productive conversations and meetings today with the Chinese delegation earlier,” Trump said. He also described the banquet as “another cherished opportunity to discuss among friends”.
Xi used the occasion to stress the importance of cooperation between the world’s two largest economies, while also referencing Trump’s “Make America Great Again” political slogan.
“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can totally go hand in hand, help each other succeed, and advance the wellbeing of the whole world,” Xi said.
The summit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, with conflicts in the Middle East and wider concerns over trade, security and global energy markets placing renewed focus on relations between Washington and Beijing. China has sought to position itself as a potential diplomatic actor in regional disputes while maintaining economic ties with Iran and other Gulf countries.
The US, meanwhile, continues to balance its security commitments in the Middle East alongside broader strategic competition with China. Trump did not provide further details about any specific Chinese proposals regarding mediation efforts or future diplomatic engagement with Iran. Chinese officials also did not immediately elaborate on Xi’s reported offer to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz or assist peace efforts.
The summit in Beijing is expected to continue with further talks on trade, regional security and economic cooperation between the two countries.
