Ayrton Redfearn, a 23 year old British man from Devon, has been killed while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine, as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues to claim the lives of foreign volunteers involved in the conflict.
According to the BBC, Redfearn died on 9 May while serving in the Donetsk region, one of the most fiercely contested areas of the war and the focus of heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops over the past two years.
Redfearn had travelled to Ukraine last year and joined a specialist military unit fighting on behalf of Kyiv. He was known by the call sign “Musso” and had recently been promoted to the role of team leader, according to tributes shared by his family and fellow fighters.
His mother, who identified herself as Natasha, revealed that her son had been due to receive a bravery award only days before his death after reportedly saving another person’s life during military operations.

In a lengthy tribute shared on Facebook, Natasha described her son as being “extremely happy” while serving in Ukraine and said he had formed close friendships with volunteers from across the world who shared the same mission of supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
She said Redfearn’s commander and comrades had paid tribute to his “exceptional service” and praised him as an “outstanding soldier”. Natasha added that despite the realities of war, her son remained “clever, funny” and a “prankster” while off duty, helping boost morale among fellow fighters.
According to the tribute, Redfearn’s fellow soldiers described him as “100% locked in and competent when it was time to go to work”, highlighting both his professionalism and commitment during combat operations.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it was supporting the family following Redfearn’s death and said it remained in contact with Ukrainian authorities.
An FCDO spokesperson said the department was assisting the family of a British national who had died in Ukraine.
The British government continues to strongly discourage UK nationals from travelling to Ukraine to take part in military operations because of the severe dangers involved. Official government guidance warns that British citizens fighting in Ukraine have previously been killed or captured during the conflict, while humanitarian workers have also faced detention by Russian authorities.
The guidance states that the risk to life and the possibility of mistreatment remain high for anyone entering active conflict zones in Ukraine.
Thousands of foreign volunteers travelled to Ukraine after Russia launched its full scale invasion in February 2022. Early in the war, Ukrainian officials said more than 20,000 people from 52 countries had joined the country’s war effort. However, Ukrainian authorities have since classified the number of foreign fighters currently serving in military units for security reasons.
The conflict in eastern Ukraine continues to produce heavy casualties on both sides, particularly in the Donetsk region where fighting remains intense.
Redfearn is among several British nationals who have reportedly been killed, injured or detained while participating in the conflict since the war began.
