UN Chief to Organise 2nd Meeting of Special Envoys for Afghanistan

Tremblay emphasised that this is to discuss the recommendations of the independent assessments….reports Asian Lite News

Associate Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Stephanie Tremblay said that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has intended to organise the second meeting of the country’s special envoys for Afghanistan at an appropriate time, as reported by TOLO News.

Tremblay emphasised that this is to discuss the recommendations of the independent assessments.

“This is to cement international consensus on the way forward and to discuss the recommendations of the independent assessments,” she said.

Moreover, Tremblay said that the mission of the UN Special Coordinator and Independent Assessor of the UN, Feridun Hadi Sinirlioglu, has been extended until the end of February, reported TOLO News.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has called for the invitation of its representatives to the meeting of the special envoy.

“Any meeting which is being held regarding Afghanistan, the presence of the representatives of the Islamic Emirate is needed. If the representatives of the Islamic Emirate is not present, the meeting will undoubtedly not be effective,” said Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson.

International relations analyst Wahid Faqiri noted that in the past two and a half years, the Taliban has been creating problems for the international community.

“The Afghan government should have a parallel movement regarding such meetings. Unfortunately, the Taliban government during the past two and a half years has made hurdles ahead of the international community instead of cooperating with it,” Faqiri said.

Earlier, the Russian special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, highlighted that the broad meeting on Afghanistan under the auspices of the UN may be conducted in mid-January, reported TASS.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the recently adopted UN Security Council resolution highlights the support of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for Afghanistan’s integration into the international community only if Kabul meets its international obligations, as reported by TOLO News.

Earlier, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Friday co-penned by the UAE and Japan that focuses on a path for Afghanistan’s reintegration into the international community, referencing the recently completed independent assessment on Afghanistan.

The resolution shows that the UNSC supports a “process by which Afghanistan is integrated into the international community only by meeting its international obligations,” he said.

While addressing a press briefing, Miller said, “We do support the resolution.”

He emphasised that Washington thinks “the resolution sends a clear message to the Taliban, to the Afghan people, and the world” about the UNSC’s support for the reintegration of Afghanistan into the international community, TOLO News reported.

Moreover, the resolution called for a UN special envoy for Afghanistan.

“It is our belief that a special envoy would be well-positioned to coordinate international engagement on Afghanistan to achieve the objectives laid out in the resolution,” he said.

Moreover, he further expressed concerns regarding the “Taliban’s repressive edicts against women and girls and its unwillingness to foster inclusive governance.”

“The decisions that it has made risk irreparable damage to Afghanistan’s society and move the Taliban further away from normalising relations with the international community,” he added. (ANI)
