Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has reaffirmed the military’s determination to defeat terrorism during a visit to Corps Headquarters in Peshawar, as Indian intelligence officials cited in a report have alleged that Pakistan-based militant networks are being rebuilt.
Munir made the remarks on Tuesday while reviewing the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ongoing counter terrorism operations, border management and the operational preparedness of military formations in the province.
“The armed forces, with the unwavering support of the nation, remain resolute in their determination to defeat terrorism and ensure lasting peace and stability across the country,” Munir said, according to Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter Services Public Relations.
The remarks come amid continuing militant activity involving the Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
However, an IANS report citing Indian intelligence officials alleged that Munir’s public statements on terrorism have focused on the TTP and BLA while not referring to Lashkar e Taiba (LeT) and Jaish e Mohammed (JeM), both of which India identifies as major militant organisations.
According to the officials cited by IANS, meetings involving Pakistan’s military and intelligence leadership have focused on rebuilding infrastructure associated with LeT and JeM following Operation Sindoor in May 2025. These claims have not been independently established in the public record.
One Indian intelligence official quoted in the report alleged that Pakistan’s military establishment was providing support to the groups while publicly focusing its counter terrorism efforts on the TTP and BLA.
The official also alleged that Munir had sought to project himself favourably among militant organisations, citing posters and signboards featuring the army chief alongside senior LeT commanders in Lahore. The claims were not independently verified in the report.
The report further cited counter terrorism experts as questioning the consistency between Munir’s stated position against terrorism and alleged contacts involving militant groups.
It also alleged that Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) had been considered in operations against the TTP and BLA. ISKP has previously been identified as a militant organisation opposed to both Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban.
The report said Munir’s immediate security focus remained on Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where authorities face continued challenges from the BLA and TTP.
In Balochistan, the report attributed support for the BLA among sections of the population to grievances over development, basic services and the distribution of revenue from the province’s natural resources. It also said that Pakistani authorities had responded with tougher security measures in Balochistan, Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Pakistan’s military has continued to describe its operations as part of efforts to counter terrorism and maintain national security. During his Peshawar visit, Munir directed formations to remain vigilant and maintain high levels of operational preparedness.
The competing claims highlight the wider security challenges facing Pakistan, with the authorities focused on militant threats in its western regions while India continues to raise concerns over the activities of groups such as LeT and JeM.
The allegations regarding the rebuilding of militant infrastructure and alleged coordination with the groups remain contested and would require independent corroboration.
