Bangladesh Under Health Siege as Dengue, Measles Rise

Bangladesh is facing mounting pressure on its healthcare system as a surge in dengue infections coincides with a major measles outbreak….reports Asian Lite News Desk

Bangladesh is facing mounting pressure on its healthcare system as dengue infections continue to rise following a deadly September, while hospitals are also dealing with a widespread measles outbreak. The overlapping outbreaks are increasing demand for medical staff, hospital beds, diagnostic services and essential supplies, according to a report by Devdiscourse.

Citing Health Ministry figures, the report said dengue had claimed at least 245 lives and resulted in 79,620 hospital admissions since January. September was the deadliest month, accounting for 148 deaths, compared with 43 in August and 36 in July.

Nearly 60 per cent of the reported dengue deaths this year occurred in September, highlighting the sharp deterioration in the outbreak as Bangladesh entered October.

Kabirul Bashar, a medical entomologist at Jahangirnagar University, warned that the dengue situation could worsen further this month.

According to his forecasting model, rainfall recorded in September could continue to influence dengue transmission through delayed effects, while weather conditions remain favourable for mosquito activity.

The report said the forecast should be treated as an expert projection rather than a confirmed outcome. However, it stressed the need for health authorities to prepare staff, diagnostic services, essential supplies and referral arrangements before hospital admissions potentially increase further.

It also said the rise in dengue deaths requires further investigation, as available figures cannot determine whether the fatalities are linked to increased infections, delayed presentation, difficulties accessing medical care or other factors.

Identifying the reasons behind the increase is important for authorities because each factor would require a different response, the report said.

The dengue surge comes as Bangladesh continues to deal with a major measles outbreak, adding further pressure to an already stretched healthcare system.

According to government data cited by Devdiscourse, 21,520 measles cases had been confirmed since March 15, while more than 190,000 people had sought treatment for suspected measles or similar symptoms. More than 1,100 children have reportedly died from measles this year.

Although dengue and measles require different prevention and treatment strategies, the report noted that both outbreaks rely on overlapping healthcare resources.

The outbreaks can increase demand for clinical staff, diagnostic facilities, hospital space and reliable supplies, potentially putting additional pressure on health services.

The report warned that efforts to expand dengue treatment must not weaken routine vaccination or other essential healthcare services, as this could prolong the wider health emergency.

It called for a coordinated response to protect childhood immunisation while strengthening dengue treatment capacity.

The report also highlighted the importance of district-level information on hospital admissions, available beds and referral delays to help authorities direct resources towards areas facing the greatest pressure.
