India and the United States have discussed expanding defence cooperation and strengthening their strategic partnership, with senior military leaders focusing on continued collaboration and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM), met Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, Commander-in-Chief of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Command, during his visit to India.

The US Embassy in India welcomed the meeting, describing it as a sign of closer defence ties between the two countries.

“The U.S.-India Major Defense Partnership keeps moving forward! On his way to Japan, United States Pacific Command commander Admiral Paparo met with Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, AVSM, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command to discuss continued cooperation between our defense forces. It is great to see our partnership deepen as we work together towards a safer Indo-Pacific region,” the embassy said in a post on X.

The meeting followed a high-level gathering of American and Indian military leaders hosted by the US Embassy at Roosevelt House in New Delhi last week.

The event brought together Paparo, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, Chief of Defence Staff General N S Raja Subramani, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth and other senior Indian defence officials.

The embassy said the gathering highlighted the growing strength of the India-US Major Defence Partnership.

During his visit, Paparo also met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh to discuss ways to strengthen defence and strategic cooperation. The two sides exchanged views on regional and global developments, according to India’s Ministry of Defence.

In a post on X, the ministry said: “Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh met with Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the US Pacific Command, who is on a visit to India. During the meeting, both sides discussed strengthening India-US defence and strategic cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues.”

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also highlighted Paparo’s engagements with senior Indian defence officials, describing the visit as an indication of the importance both countries attach to their military partnership.

Gor said Paparo commands the United States’ oldest and largest geographic combatant command, overseeing approximately 400,000 military and civilian personnel across a region covering roughly half the globe.

The ambassador also noted Paparo’s meeting with General Raja Subramani, General Seth, Vice Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Tejinder Singh and other senior Indian defence officials.

The discussions come as New Delhi and Washington continue to develop their defence relationship, with military engagement forming an important part of wider cooperation between the two countries.

The Indo-Pacific remains a key area of shared strategic interest, and the latest meetings provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss regional security and maintain contact between their defence establishments.

However, the official statements did not disclose specific new defence agreements or operational commitments arising from the meetings.
