Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna is actively supporting US President Joe Biden in South Carolina, the home state of fellow Indian-American and Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley. Khanna expressed his pride in campaigning alongside President Biden during his visit to Columbia, South Carolina, a crucial battleground state for both Democratic and Republican primaries. While the Democratic primary is scheduled for February 3, the GOP primary is set for February 24.
Khanna praised Biden’s impassioned case for the accomplishments of the Democratic party and himself. Notably, Biden is the sole Democratic candidate, while former President Donald Trump and Nikki Haley are the two Republican contenders in South Carolina. Recent polls indicate Trump leading with 52%, while Haley lags behind at 21.8%. Despite the gap, Haley remains optimistic about a strong showing in her home state on February 23.
During an event in Columbia, Khanna criticised Haley, suggesting that a better understanding of Civil Rights history could shape her perspectives. He highlighted the historical significance of the 1965 Immigration Act, emphasizing that figures like Jim Clyburn, Eleanor Norton, and John Lewis played crucial roles in shaping immigration policies that allowed individuals like Nikki Haley and his own parents to come to America.

Khanna urged reflection on history, citing personal connections to India’s independence movement and emphasizing the profound impact of the civil rights movement on opening opportunities for people of colour in America. He underscored the importance of understanding the moral debt owed to the civil rights movement for progress in the future.
Addressing the significance of history, Khanna pointed out how HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) played a vital role in hiring Indian-American parents who faced discrimination at prestigious institutions like Harvard, Stanford, or Yale. He stressed the need to acknowledge historical realities to make informed progress.
Khanna reiterated his commitment to supporting President Biden, emphasising the President’s achievements in areas like the economy, HBCU funding, high-speed internet, small business support, and student loan relief. He warned against reverting to Trump-era policies, asserting that the country would regress if Trump were re-elected. Khanna also mentioned his plans to advocate for Biden in states like Michigan and Nevada, highlighting the contrast between Biden’s policies and Trump’s economic approach.
