Far-Right Icon Le Pen Passes Away

Despite being expelled from the party in 2015, Le Pen’s divisive legacy remains a defining chapter in French politics, leaving a lasting impact on the trajectory of the far-right….reports Asian Lite News

Jean-Marie Le Pen, co-founder of France’s far-right National Front, passed away at 96, senior party official Sebastien Chenu announced Tuesday.

A polarizing figure in French politics, Le Pen was known for his fiery anti-immigration rhetoric and staunch opposition to multiculturalism, which garnered both fervent supporters and widespread criticism. His career was marred by controversial statements, including Holocaust denial, resulting in multiple convictions and strained alliances, the Business Stanadard reported.

Le Pen reached the second round of the 2002 presidential election but later became estranged from his daughter, Marine Le Pen. In 2011, she rebranded the party, now called the National Rally, to broaden its appeal, paving the way for her own political successes.

Despite being expelled from the party in 2015, Le Pen’s divisive legacy remains a defining chapter in French politics, leaving a lasting impact on the trajectory of the far-right.
