A breakthrough discovery from India has drawn international attention after scientists identified a rare plant in Kerala’s Kasaragod district with powerful anti-cancer potential.

The plant, Strobilanthes jomyi—locally known as Jomyi Kurinji—is found only in the remote Paandi and Periya forest regions of Kerala’s Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage biodiversity hotspot.

Researchers at Christ (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, led by Dr. Abhiram Suresh under the guidance of Dr. Fr. Jobi Xavier, discovered that extracts from the plant showed strong activity against multiple cancer cell lines, including colon, breast, and cervical cancers.

The study also confirmed that the plant is rich in antioxidants, phytochemicals, and rare bioactive compounds such as lupeol, squalene, and phytol, with evaluations proving it safe for human use. Experts say the findings could pave the way for novel Ayurvedic formulations and, with further research, integration into modern cancer therapies—potentially making it a game-changer in global healthcare.

Dr. Abhiram Suresh, the lead researcher and son of retired teachers Mr. Suresh V.C. and Mrs. Ushakumari K.P. from Kerala, emphasised that the discovery highlights the immense untapped medical potential of India’s biodiversity-rich regions.
