UAE struck by heavy rains

Unstable weather across the UAE triggers safety advisories, travel disruption and remote work measures as authorities mobilise round-the-clock to protect residents and maintain essential services….reports Asian Lite News

Unstable weather conditions continued to affect large parts of the UAE, with heavy thunderstorms, strong winds and intermittent rainfall prompting widespread safety advisories, travel disruptions and temporary service adjustments across multiple emirates. Authorities urged residents to remain indoors where possible, avoid flood-prone areas and limit non-essential travel as emergency teams worked around the clock to manage the impact.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) warned that unsettled conditions are likely to persist, forecasting further rainfall, thunderstorms, occasional hail, strong winds, blowing dust and rough seas across the country. The advisory prompted coordinated responses from government agencies, municipalities and transport authorities to ensure public safety and minimise disruption.

Air travel was among the sectors affected, with Emirates and flydubai cancelling or rescheduling a number of flights due to adverse conditions. Dubai Airports cautioned passengers that delays and cancellations may continue, advising travellers to allow extra time to reach terminals as water accumulation was reported on surrounding roads. Passengers were encouraged to use the Dubai Metro where possible and to check directly with airlines for the latest flight updates.

In response to the weather, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) called on private sector companies in the most affected areas to implement remote working arrangements for roles that allow it. The ministry stressed that employee health and safety must remain a priority, urging businesses nationwide to follow occupational safety guidelines and comply with directives issued by local authorities during the period of unstable weather.

Several public activities were also suspended as a precaution. Abu Dhabi announced the suspension of community events, while Visit Jebel Jais confirmed the temporary closure of the Jais Flight and Jais Sky Tour due to unsteady conditions. Authorities said the earliest reopening for both attractions would be Saturday at 11am, subject to weather improvements, and thanked visitors for their understanding while safety remains paramount.

Across Dubai, police teams were deployed on a 24-hour basis to manage traffic and ensure public safety. Operating within an integrated emergency response framework, officers coordinated with other agencies to monitor roads, assist motorists and respond swiftly to incidents linked to the heavy rainfall. Motorists were urged to drive cautiously, reduce speed and avoid flooded routes.

Dubai Municipality also mobilised extensive field teams to address waterlogging across the city. Crews remained on full alert, clearing flooded streets, monitoring drainage systems and responding to reports in real time. Authorities said the aim was to maintain smooth traffic flow while ensuring the safety of residents and road users during changing weather conditions.

Neighbouring emirates reported similar challenges. In Sharjah, heavy rainfall flooded key roads including Al Khan Bridge and Al Wahda Street, disrupting traffic and slowing movement across major routes. Officials urged drivers to exercise caution, follow official advisories and avoid waterlogged areas until conditions stabilise.

Other government entities adapted their services to reduce public movement. Ajman Port announced that all service requests could be submitted remotely, encouraging customers to book online appointments rather than visit in person. The authority said the move was designed to ensure continuity of operations while safeguarding the public during adverse weather.

Amid the widespread disruption, authorities confirmed a tragic incident in Ras Al Khaimah, where a 27-year-old Indian expatriate, Salman Fariz, lost his life after a wall collapsed during heavy rains. Officials reiterated the importance of avoiding structurally vulnerable areas during severe weather and urged residents to heed safety warnings at all times.

As emergency services, municipalities and transport authorities continue to coordinate their response, residents have been advised to remain vigilant, follow official guidance and prioritise safety until weather conditions improve.
