Trump credits ‘tariffs’ for economic growth

Donald Trump has attacked the Biden administration for rising prices and hailed sweeping tax cuts as he set out his economic agenda in a televised address to the nation…reports Asian Lite News

President Donald Trump used a national address on Wednesday to deliver a sharp critique of the Biden administration’s economic record, accusing it of driving prices to unprecedented levels while positioning his own policies as the catalyst for a coming economic boom. Speaking in primetime, Trump praised what he described as the largest tax cuts in American history and said their benefits would become increasingly visible by 2026.

In his remarks, Trump said his administration was reversing economic damage left by its predecessor. “Here at home, we’re bringing our economy back from the brink of ruin,” he said. “The last administration and their allies in Congress looted our treasury for trillions of dollars, driving up prices and everything at levels never seen before. I am bringing those high prices down and bringing them down very fast.”

The President framed his economic message around investment, manufacturing and trade, arguing that his policies were already delivering tangible results. He claimed to have secured “a record-breaking 18 trillion dollars of investment into the United States”, which he said would translate into jobs, higher wages, growth and improved national security. Trump linked much of this progress to the use of tariffs, a tool he has consistently championed.

“Much of this success has been accomplished by tariffs; my favourite word – tariffs, which for many decades have been used successfully by other countries against us,” he said. “But not anymore. Companies know that if they build in America, there are no tariffs. That’s why they are coming home to the USA in record numbers. They are building factories and plants at levels we haven’t seen.”

Trump presented tariffs not only as a means of protecting domestic industry but also as an incentive for multinational firms to relocate production to the United States. The emphasis on reshoring manufacturing has been a central pillar of his economic narrative, particularly as he seeks to contrast his approach with that of previous administrations.

Looking ahead, the President struck an optimistic tone, predicting a period of exceptional growth. “We’re poised for an economic boom, the likes of which the world has never seen,” he said. He also pointed to a series of high-profile international events scheduled to take place in the United States, including the football World Cup and the Olympic Games, which he said would further showcase the country on the global stage.

Trump also highlighted the approaching 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, casting it as a symbolic milestone for the nation. “But most importantly, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence,” he said, linking the commemoration to his broader message about national renewal and prosperity.

Alongside economic policy, the President used the address to announce a financial payment for members of the armed forces. He said more than 1,450,000 military service members would receive what he described as a “special warrior dividend” before Christmas. “In honour of our nation’s founding in 1776, we are sending every soldier 1,776 dollars,” Trump said, framing the payment as both a patriotic gesture and a recognition of military service.

The announcement was positioned as part of a wider effort to underline support for the armed forces, a theme that has featured prominently in Trump’s public messaging. The proposed payment, timed for the festive period, was presented as a direct benefit delivered under his leadership.

According to Fox News, the speech came as Trump has launched a renewed push to focus attention on his economic policies, amid criticism over how his administration has communicated its record on the economy. The address appeared designed to reset the narrative, emphasising tax cuts, investment and manufacturing as evidence of economic strength.

While Trump’s claims and projections are likely to be closely scrutinised by political opponents and economists, the address underscored his determination to centre his presidency on economic performance, trade policy and national pride, as he seeks to define the trajectory of the United States in the years ahead.
