Online Body Lotion Surge

The report urged brands to rethink traditional mass-market strategies to tap the growing body lotion opportunity. Recommended approaches include platform-led distribution, deep insights-driven D2C models, optimised SKU architecture, and trust-building mechanisms beyond paid media

Online channels are projected to account for over half of India’s body lotion sales by 2030, a new report by Redseer Strategy Consultants revealed on Saturday. The study highlighted that masstige brands—priced between Rs 1.5 and 6 per ml—offering a mix of mass appeal and premium positioning will drive more than 30 per cent of the online opportunity.

The report noted that as of CY2025, online penetration in the body lotion segment is around 30 per cent, higher than the overall beauty and personal care (BPC) market at 20 per cent. This momentum is expected to continue, fuelled by increasing e-commerce spends by urban women and the growth of digitally native brands.

Consumers are increasingly drawn to expert-validated, clinically tested formulations. “Brands leveraging dermatological credibility are building sustainable moats through professional advocacy and ingredient transparency. The shift from basic moisturisers to functional, ingredient-centric products is evident, with brands foraying into Vitamin E, shea butter, and other active ingredient-based formulations,” the report said.

Ethical and wellness trends are also reshaping the segment. Paraben-free, vegan, and cruelty-free lotions have moved from niche to mainstream, with several brands differentiating through indulgent scent profiles such as vanilla, caramel, and hazelnut, creating an elevated sensory experience.

The report urged brands to rethink traditional mass-market strategies to tap the growing body lotion opportunity. Recommended approaches include platform-led distribution, deep insights-driven D2C models, optimised SKU architecture, and trust-building mechanisms beyond paid media.

“For investors and retailers, body lotions represent a category with structural tailwinds: rising disposable incomes, expanding target users, increasing sophistication in personal care, and digital commerce’s ability to educate and convert consumers at scale,” the report added.

As digital adoption grows and consumers become more conscious about ingredients, efficacy, and ethical positioning, online channels are expected to solidify their dominance in India’s body lotion market, making e-commerce the primary avenue for growth in the coming decade.
