His life and legacy, marked by ambition stands in sharp contrast to the tragic situations of his passing. At the very least, let’s hope justice will prevail for his integrity and the lives he touched…writes Shelja Pallath
Suicides always hit hard. The unexpected death of CJ Roy, a prominent Malayali expat and entrepreneur, has left many in that shock. The 57 year old real estate magnate, founder of the Confident Group, reportedly took his own life in his Bengaluru office on the day the Income Tax Department conducted a search in his office. The circumstances of his death have sparked intense speculation, raising questions not only about the mental stress faced by businessmen but also about the constitutional and ethical concerns regarding compulsory tax actions.
Roy, born Roy Chiriyankandath Joseph in Kerala and raised in Bengaluru, was widely admired as a visionary real estate developer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. His adventure started in his early years, observing his mother, a local real estate agent, as they purchased land, built homes, and managed transactions. By following her accounts and understanding the complexities of land dealings, Roy developed a sharp business insight that would later supported his remarkable success in transforming parts of Bengaluru and Kerala.
In 2005, he founded the Confident Group, which grew to operate across multiple industries including entertainment and aviation. Known for his confidence that perfectly reflected in his company’s name, Roy’s short speeches and interviews often emphasized ambition and perseverance. He was active on social media with millions of followers, sharing updates about his business ventures, travel, and love for cars. Starting with a Maruti in 1994, his collection ultimately included luxury high end brands like Rolls Royce and Bugatti Veyron, yet he maintained a personal connection to even his earliest holdings.
Roy’s perception was not limited to real estate. He always framed his work as more than selling homes, presenting it as offering dreams to aspiring homeowners. His company sponsored reality show winners, including contestants from Idea Star Singer and Bigg Boss Malayalam, funded films, and organised global events, reflecting his engagement with diverse ventures. He committed some new projects even just before the unexpected death. The sudden end of such an ambitious and optimistic figure only amplifies the shock. How could someone so forward looking meet such an abrupt demise?
The contexts surrounding his death are particularly disturbing. According to reports, the Income Tax Department carried out a search at his office, and Roy was subjected to questioning. He allegedly shot himself later that afternoon, and even though his staff gave him emergency assistance, his life was not saved. While the exact reasons remain unclear, public discourse has largely focused on the timing of the tax raids, fuelling debate and conjecture.
Beyond individual tragedy, Roy’s death raises critical questions about the reach and conduct of tax enforcement. Regardless of any findings about his financial affairs, the situation highlights a broader issue; how far can a coercive tax search extend before it begins to encroach upon a person’s right to life and privacy under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution? The case underscores the delicate balance between legal accountability and humane treatment, particularly for individuals facing intense professional scrutiny. The prolonged tax scrutiny faced by the Kitex Group and its promoters is a recent example frequently cited by critics to illustrate use of investigative agencies and the pressures exerted through state machinery.

CJ Roy’s sudden death is a clear reminder that success and fame do not shield one from personal crisis. It triggers reflection not only on the stress endured by high-profile entrepreneurs but also on systemic practices that intersect with human dignity, rights, and mental health. Even though after many doubts and discussions, C J Roy’s death note has now been found and has become central to the investigation. The note points fingers at his financial dealings and personal decisions leading up to his final step. Investigators hope it will help uncover the real reason behind his death.
His life and legacy, marked by ambition stands in sharp contrast to the tragic situations of his passing. At the very least, let’s hope justice will prevail for his integrity and the lives he touched.
