Veteran singer Asha Bhosle, one of the most celebrated and versatile voices in Indian music history, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, bringing to a close a remarkable career that shaped the sound of Indian cinema for more than eight decades.
Dr Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital confirmed her death, stating that the legendary playback singer died due to multi-organ failure. “Asha Bhosale breathed her last today at Breach Candy Hospital. She passed away due to multi-organ failure,” he said.
Bhosle had been admitted to the Mumbai hospital on Saturday evening after suffering from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, had earlier confirmed the hospitalisation on social media, asking for privacy for the family while assuring that treatment was underway.
Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle began singing at a young age and rose to prominence in the 1950s, eventually becoming one of the most influential playback singers in India and globally. Her distinctive voice, known for its emotional range and versatility, defined generations of Hindi film music.
Over her extraordinary career, she recorded thousands of songs in multiple Indian languages, spanning genres from classical and ghazals to pop, folk, and cabaret. Her collaborations with leading music directors and filmmakers produced some of the most enduring tracks in Indian cinema history.
Among her most iconic songs are Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Chura Liya Hai Tumne, Mera Kuchh Saaman, and Dil Cheez Kya Hai, each showcasing her ability to move seamlessly across styles and emotions.
Her contributions were widely recognised with major honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award. In 2011, she was also recognised by the Guinness World Records as the most-recorded artist in music history.
