“Sensationalism is a very easy reward. It’s a very quick and easy reward, and it’s a very quick new cycle,” Konkona said. “And we’re not looking at that. We’re approaching this as a film with a great deal of nuance and depth, staying away from easy answers.” Her comments underscore a conscious effort by both the cast and crew to present a story that challenges viewers, rather than providing simplistic or exploitative narratives.
Accused follows the story of a woman who has been alleged to sexually harass a victim, exploring the consequences on her personal and professional relationships. Konkona, who plays the lead, said the film examines what happens to relationships when such an accusation arises, how they unravel or reconfigure, and the ways in which pre-existing biases influence judgment. “It’s really more an exploration of power and human relationships. What were the pre-existing biases—positive or negative—that we hold towards a woman in power, or a queer couple? How does that affect our judgment? It’s actually a completely different ballgame altogether,” she explained.
Director Anubhuti Kashyap, who helmed the project, echoed Konkona’s perspective, stressing that the subject demanded a sensitive lens. “The story, the subject, was such that it always needed a certain lens, a certain empathetic approach,” she said. “It couldn’t have been sensationalized. While writing the script, we consciously made choices that focused on incidents and events that make people uncomfortable—not the queer relationship itself, but many other underlying dynamics in the story.”
Kashyap added that the film’s approach was rooted in realism and emotional truth, with an emphasis on exploring complex social dynamics rather than relying on exaggerated dramatics to engage viewers.
