Indian diplomatic missions and consulates across the United States marked India’s 77th Republic Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and strong participation from the Indian diaspora, underscoring the enduring connection between overseas Indians and the country’s constitutional values.
From Washington to Seattle, New York to Houston, and Chicago to Boston, celebrations were held at embassies, consulates and community venues, bringing together diplomats, local officials and members of the Indian-American community to commemorate the adoption of India’s Constitution and the birth of the republic.
In Washington, DC, India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, unfurled the national tricolour at India House, formally opening the Republic Day observances. The Embassy of India said the President of India’s address to the nation, delivered on the eve of Republic Day, was relayed to attendees during the ceremony. Members of the Indian diaspora joined embassy officials for the event, reflecting the strong engagement of the community in national celebrations abroad.
The Washington ceremony also included the presentation of awards to winners of a competition organised to mark Vishwa Hindi Diwas, highlighting the role of Indian languages and cultural heritage among overseas Indians. The embassy noted that the programme was attended by a wide cross-section of the Indian-American community.
On the West Coast, the Consulate of India in Seattle hosted Republic Day celebrations at the Federal Reserve Building, where the Indian tricolour was hoisted in the presence of local officials and community members. The consulate expressed appreciation to Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson for attending the event and reaffirming the friendship between India and the city of Seattle. More than 300 members of the Indian-American community participated in the celebrations, which also saw the inauguration of the new India Consular Application Center, co-located with the consulate, aimed at improving consular services.
In New York, the Consulate General of India marked the occasion with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, who also read out the President of India’s address to the nation. The consulate said the address highlighted the core values of the Indian Constitution and the role of citizens in India and the diaspora in building a Developed India@2047. Despite extreme winter weather, members of the community attended the event in large numbers, a gesture that was publicly acknowledged by the mission.
In Houston, Republic Day was observed with what the Consulate General of India described as solemnity and pride. Consul General D.C. Manjunath unfurled the national flag and read the President’s address. The celebrations also featured a special “Vande Mataram” exhibition, marking 150 years of the national song and tracing its significance in India’s freedom movement and national consciousness.
Similar observances were held in Chicago, where the Consul General unfurled the tricolour at the consulate and the President’s address was read during the ceremony. The event was followed by a brief cultural programme commemorating the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram”, reinforcing the link between India’s freedom struggle and its republican values.
In Boston, Deputy Consul General Shruthi Purushotam joined members of the Indian Association of Greater Boston and the wider community to celebrate Republic Day. The event reflected the shared spirit of unity and cultural pride among overseas Indians and highlighted India’s constitutional values, diversity and heritage.
