India will host five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil in an international friendly in Kolkata on October 3, marking the first-ever visit by the Brazilian senior men’s national team to the country.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on Thursday that the match will be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, setting up one of the most high-profile fixtures in Indian football history.
“The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is proud to announce that the Brazil senior men’s national team will play an international friendly match against India on October 3, 2026, in Kolkata,” the federation said in a statement.
Currently ranked fifth in the FIFA World Rankings, Brazil will become the highest-ranked opposition India have faced since the FIFA rankings were introduced in 1992. India are currently ranked 138th.
Although several Brazilian football legends, including Pelé, have played exhibition matches in India, this will be the first appearance by Brazil’s senior national team. Pelé famously played for the New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in September 1977, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw before a crowd of more than 80,000 spectators.
Brazil remain the most successful team in men’s World Cup history, having won the tournament five times. Their rich footballing legacy has earned them a large following in India, which is regarded as one of the country’s biggest overseas fan bases.
AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan described the fixture as a landmark occasion for Indian football.
“To welcome a team of Brazil’s stature to our country is an extraordinary moment and one that will undoubtedly become a landmark chapter in the history of Indian football,” he said.
AIFF National Teams Director Subrata Paul said the match would provide India’s players with a rare opportunity to measure themselves against one of the world’s elite football nations.
“For our national team players, this is far more than just another match. It is a rare opportunity to test themselves against one of the greatest footballing nations the game has ever known. Experiences like these challenge players to grow, inspire them to dream bigger, and leave memories that stay with them throughout their careers,” he said.
Brazil recently competed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Norway in the Round of 16. India did not qualify for the final stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
The friendly is expected to draw significant interest from football fans across the country and will be one of the biggest international matches staged on Indian soil in recent years.
